Action intensifies as US junior trials set for grand finale

ANOTHER busy schedule in the handball courts for the coming week, with the concluding games in the USHA Junior trials to finalise the Irish team to travel to Chicago over the Christmas period to compete in the USHA Junior National Championship.

The programme scheduled for last Sunday which included the Boys 15 and Under semi-finals and final in Mullingar and the Boys 17 and Under final in Cappagh were called off on Saturday evening because of concerns expressed at the extreme weather forecast for Saturday night and Sunday and the travel distance for all players involved.

The games deferred have been rescheduled for this Saturday with the the Under 15 semi-finals and final scheduled for Mullingar commencing at 2pm, the line up for the semi-finals is Denis O'Neill, Liscarroll v Donal O'Leary, Carlow. Darren Doherty v Donal Wrynn, Leitrim or Michael Carson, Armagh, Wrynn and Carson play their quarterfinal game this Thursday evening in Monaghan. Denis O'Neill is in with a great chance of taking the spoils here.

The Boys 17 and Under Final also goes ahead on Saturday at Cappagh at 2pm with Killian Carroll striving to overcome Martin Mulkerrins, Galway in what promises to be another cracking contest.

In their meeting in the 17 and Under World Final in Portland there was very little between with Mulkerrins shading it on that occasion, Killian will be hoping he can overturn that result and while it may take a huge effort from him he is well capable of getting a result on this occasion.

Liscarroll also have an important date on Sunday when they travel to Cashel to take on Wexford club Barntown in the All-Ireland 40/20 Junior B Inter Club championship semifinal, Liscarroll have a strong line up with Shane Hedigan, Thomas O'Neill, Eugene O'Sullivan, Arthur O'Neill and Pat O'Brien all played well in the Munster championship win but they will have to again be at their best as Barntown it appears were also very impressive in winning the Leinster title have a good line up and wont be easily beaten. Hopefully Liscarroll with a good display can shade it and book a place in the All-Ireland final in two weeks time.

The Jerry Hallahan Memorial Team tournament final was played on Tuesday evening with the hosts Liscarroll A taking on Broadford, that clears the way for the Joe Collins Memorial Masters Singles Tournament open to Masters players in Munster but confined to an entry of sixteen. The first games were played last night ( Wednesday) and will continue tonight ( Thursday), and the following night to complete the first round games programme each night will commence at 7.30pm.

Tonight ( Thursday) two interesting games Jerry Guiney, Ballydesmond faces John Frazer, Galbally, and in the second game Pat Donnellan, Newmarket-On-Fergus plays Denis O Neill, Liscarroll, tomorrow Friday John Hedigan, Liscarroll plays John Cawley, Newmarket-On-Fergus with Donal O'Connor, Cappagh taking on John Kiersey, Kilworth in the second game.

On Saturday evening Tomas Donegan, Galbally will play John McDonagh, Fermoy, and John Herlihy, St Finbarrs, will take on Kevin Buckley, Mallow.

Two quarter-finals will be played on Monday evening and two on Tuesday evening. Both semifinals are down for Friday 4th and final to follow possibly on Monday 7.

The County Juvenile committee have organised a girls singles tournament for Saturday in association with Conna club who have agreed to host it, with games due to commence at 11am. There will be separate tournaments at under 9, 10, 11 and 12 which should appeal to the large number of girls now playing and lets hope they will travel to Conna on Saturday in large numbers and have a most enjoyable day.

On Sunday the spotlight will switch to the Kerry venue Ballymacelligott where the Eileen Twomey Girls and Ladies Memorial Tournament will be staged with play commencing at 11am. There will be an added impetus for this tournament on this occasion in that it will be doubled as the 125th anniversary tournament. It has proved to be a very successful and well run tournament over the years with the Ballymacelligott club making a huge effort every year to make it successful and enjoyable for all the girls and ladies who compete in the different grades.
