Plenty of Cork representation at Juvenile Munster semi-finals
Thursday February 18 2010
THE very busy schedule of Inter County activity continues over the weekend and the coming week, with many important games for both our adult and juvenile players.
Over the past two weekends the Mallow Credit Union sponsored juveniles have been fairly busy with the county finals in Mallow followed last Sunday by their clash with Limerick in the first round of the Munster championship at the Mallow and Ballydesmond venues. Following last Sunday's very successful outing against Limerick it's all systems go next weekend in Waterford for the juvenile semi-finals on Saturday and Sunday.
At the Mallow Credit Union sponsored juvenile finals in Mallow two weeks ago the feeling was that the standard in those finals was exceptionally high with most of the players who were going out to represent Cork last Sunday playing very well.
Cork's only loss in Ballydesmond was in Girls U12 Doubles with the Ballydesmond pair of Aoife Kerins/Nicole Culloty losing narrowly to Limerick's Quiva Donovan/ Emma Bourke.
In Girls U13 Doubles the Ballydesmond pair Laura Kelly/Aoife Clifford were easy winners. In Boys U12 Singles Kilworth's Oisin Hickey beat Limerick'sLuke Giraldi, while in U13 Singles Kilworth's Jamie Kenneally defeated Limerick's Glen McNamara.
In Boys 13 Doubles the Cork run continued with Shane Flynn, Boherbue and Aidan O'Brien, Kilworth teaming up to win.
In U14 Doubles Aidan Kerins, Ballydesmond, and Brian Sheehan, Kilworth also impressed in their win, while the Boys U15 Doubles saw the Liscarroll pair Daniel Relihan/Michael Hedigan score an easy win.
At Mallow in Boys U12 Doubles the Mallow pair David Walsh/ Gearoid O'Connell disposed of the Limerick challenge.
In Boys U16 Doubles Mallow partnership Darren Whelan/ Patrick Herlihy had an easy win, while in Under 17 Doubles Colm Kearney, Ballydesmond, and Ciaran Buckley, Mallow, also advanced. In U16 Singles Denis O'Neill, Liscarroll also won.
Byes were awarded in Boys U17 Singles Patrick Roche, Conna; Girls U12 Singles Caroline Roche, Kilworth; Girls U13 Singles Katie Fleming, Boherbue; Girls U14 Singles Sophie Carroll, Mallow; Girls 14 Doubles Brid Horgan, Kilworth and Mairead Brosnan, Ballydesmond. All will be involved on Saturday and Sunday.
There is a very attractive programme in Cappagh on Saturday, which features both semi-finals of the Munster Senior Doubles Championship.
Limerick's Seamus O'Carroll/CJ Fitzpatrick play Kerry's Dominic Lynch/John Joe Quirke, followed by the meeting of Cork's Colm Jordan (Fermoy)/Shane Hedigan (Liscarroll) against Tipperary's David Moloney/Fergal Collins.
In other Munster championship action during the next seven days there are some very important games for Cork players,
This Thursday Cork players will be involved at a number of venues. At Kilworth at 8pm local player John Kiersey will take on Clare's John Nihill in Masters B Singles semi-final a game John should win.
Also this evening at Galbally there is a two-game programme with Cork interest in the first which is Minor Doubles semi-final with Killian Carroll, Mallow and Arthur O'Neill, Liscarroll taking on Clare Jamie Lynch/Ciaran Malone.
At Conna the local pair Pat Clancy/Barrie O'Regan face Tipperary 2's John Lee/Paul Maher at 8pm.
Tomorrow, Friday, at Ballinahinch again commencing 8pm In Intermediate Doubles another Cork v Tipperary clash with Finbarr Rafferty, St Finbarrs and Alan O'Dwyer, Fermoy teaming up to face Ger Coonan/ Michael Carroll in what will be a tough assignment for the Cork pair on their best form they could win it but they will have to up the ante if they hope to advance.
On Friday the Fermoy pair Tom McDonagh/John McDonagh, Jnr who defeated Kerry on Monday in Junior B Doubles they will face Tipperary John Ferncombe/Michael Purcell the game is scheduled for 8pm but the venue has not been decided.
On Sunday in Ballydesmond at 2pm another interesting game with the local pair Brendan/Niall Fleming taking on Clare Diarmuid Nash/Niall Malone in Intermediate Doubles hard to call it Clare will start favourites but Brendan and Niall are well capable of winning it.
Last Saturday evening in Cappagh the Munster Senior Singles semi-finals produced two cracking contest Dominic Lynch, Kerry defeated Diarmuid Nash, Clare while in the second semi-final which was an all Cork affair Colm Jordan proved too strong for Brendan Fleming. The final is scheduled for Saturday February 27 in Cappagh.
Also this weekend the Girls Interprovincial team championship will be played in Kingscourt with Munster travelling with a fairly strong line up with the Ballydesmond girls Catriona Casey and Aisling O'Keeffe spearheading the Munster challenge, for the past few years the destination of the title has boiled down to a Munster v Connacht battle and this weekend looks no different.
