Six wins out of six for Herlihy

THE sixth and penultimate road race in the Ballyhoura Active Summer Series of events took place on Friday night in conjunction with the Kilteely and Dromkeen Community Festival. Conditions were ideal for running with a cool and clear evening greeting the 70 or so runners from Cork, Limerick and Tipperary as they prepared to tackle the scenic if undulating route from outside the An Teach Community Centre in Cloverfield.
Michael Herlihy of North Cork AC - who is also the co-ordinator for the rejuvenated Ballyhoura Series - made it sixth wins out of six appearances when covering the five miles in a time of 26:11, exactly two minutes clear of Timmy Murphy from GrangeFermoy.
Herlihy clocked 4: 50 and 5:07 for the first two, mainly downhill, miles before slowing to 5:30 for the next two but was happy with his overall performance as he prepares for the Amsterdam Marathon in October.
Tracey Roche from Doneen was also an impressive winner of the women's race, seventh overall in a time of 30:28 with Grainne O'Callaghan of Kilfinane AC taking second place in 37:17.
Michael Herlihy was high in praise of the Kilteely & Dromkeen Community Council and especially to local runner Larry O'Grady for organising the race and getting it off exactly on time.
He also reminded runners that the seventh and final Ballyhoura event will be the Liscarroll 10km on Friday September 3 which will now start at the earlier time of 7.30pm.
