Kanturk set for cup clash with St Marys

Thursday February 02 2012

IN a weekend that saw the vast majority of the Munster Junior rugby games falling by the way side due to the inclement weather, only Charleville's game with Waterford city made it to the starting gate last Sunday. With Mallow's tie against UCC, Kanturk's cup game with limerick side St Mary's and Muskerry's home battle against Bandon all falling by the way side, the boys from the north Cork club flew the flag for the area.

Waterford City were their opponents in this Munster Junior Bowl knockout tie and the boys from the south East proved to be no match for the promotion chasing Charleville. Waterford City were the visitors in this one and they got off to a terrific start with a Kieran Crowley and a drop goal from Aaron Foskin.

The home side got back into the tie with a try from Damian Leahy which was successfully converted by Shane Corkery. Trailing by 8-7 at the turn, Charleville needed to up their game if they were to see off their competitive visitors, and that's just what they did as they took the game by the scruff of the neck scoring all the second half points while keeping Waterford scoreless for the second 40 minutes.

Tony Moffatt and Brian Buckley crossed the opposition try line after the break with Corkery again showing his prowess with the boot as he slotted over the extra points on both occasions along with a solitary penalty.

Weekend Preview

NEXT Sunday was scheduled to be a weekend off for the hard working players in the Munster Junior Rugby leagues, however after last weekend's weather cancellations some cup fixtures have been rescheduled for this weekend.

The only cup game involving a north Cork side is the rescheduled fixture between Kanturk and St Mary's. Kanturk have home advantage in this round four clash as they play host to the Limerick outfit.

The division one versus two clash should be a good test for the home side as Mary's have shown themselves a very competitive side in division two and are well in the hunt for promotion.

It's very difficult to look past Kanturk in this or any clash of late as they have shown themselves to be one of the top junior sides in the province. SUNDAY FEBRUARY 5 (2.30 pm) Kanturk v St Mary's
