RYLANE CELTIC were put to the sword at home in the first round of the Murphy's County Cup on Saturday — and all from the boot of one man.

For Carrigtwohill striker Brendan Horgan it will be a day that will live long in the memory after scoring all of his side's five goals at Glounaglough.

This game started evenly enough and both sides had chances before either registered a score. Early on Rylane's Aidan Corkery rattled the side-netting when trying to score from a Mark Long corner, but Carrigtwohill also spurned chances in the early exchanges.

The breakthrough came on the half hour mark when the pacy Brendan Horgan nipped inside the defence to meet a ball that came over the top — a recurring problem for Rylane — to shoot past keeper Mattie Leary.

From here Rylane upped their game and both Michael O'Sullivan and Tom Byrnes came close as they sought to equalise.

It was a defensive error by Carrigtwohill in the 35th minute that gave Byrnes a snapshot on goal that saw Michael O'Sullivan shoot home after the keeper blocked the initial effort.

From here, however, it was all downhill for Rylane as Horgan repeatedly unpicked their defence. His second came after he latched on to a head-on by Cian McSweeney and, after leaving the defence behind and rounding the keeper, shooting into an open net to restore their lead shortly before half time.

A rasping shot from Tom Byrnes came close to equalising for Rylane shortly after the break but keeper Mick Cremin came to Carrigtwohill's rescue and they went 3-1 up minutes later when Horgan struck again, again from a Cian McSweeney pass.

He struck again on the hour for number four — again sneaking behind the defence — and ten minutes later he hit number five with is head from a free kick.

It was a remarkable performance from Horgan but Rylane will have to own up to giving him too many opportunities.
