Thursday March 11 2010

UNDER 13 CUP: Macroom 1 Ballincollig 1 (Ballincollig won 4-1 on pens) MACROOM suffered shoot out heartbreak to exit the under 13 Cup at home to Ballincollig. It was the away side that hit the front, against the run of play.

Macroom hit back just before half time, with Darren Dineen getting the equaliser. Macroom were missing the the cutting edge of Marco Healy up front, and failed to capitalise on a great team performance and some good chances.

Extra time couldnt settle it, but penalties did as Ballincoliig prevailed by four goals to one in the dreaded shootout.

U14 PREMIER

College Corinthians 2 Lakewood Ath 1

THIS top of the table clash had everything, goals, great football and plenty of exciting moments. Lakewood only needed to get a point from this game to capture the Premier League title but will have to wait on the result of Corinthians final game against Wilton in two weeks.

Lakewood got off to the perfect start when a brilliant passing move involving Christine Coffey and Lydia Looney set Ciara Nevin free to score a great goal in the first minute of the game. But Corinthians are a good side and got back on level terms in the 15th min through Jessica Byrnes.

Five minutes later they were ahead, Megan Connolly won the ball in midfield and sprinted into the Lakewood before unleashing a great shot which was brilliantly saved by Emma Geaney in the Lakewood goal. Megan Dennehy was first to react and fired the ball into the roof of the net.

In the second half Lakewood powered forward to get the equaliser and had good efforts from Looney and Nevin go narrowly wide. Corinthians held out for a vital win and must now win their last game to force a play off. Best for Corinthians were Sheila Kearney, Maeve Molloy and Kim Dennehy.

UNDER 11 PREMIER

Mallow 1 Lakewood 0

IN this Saturday clash, Mallow were ahead within four minutes of kick-off when a wicked shot from just outside the box left the Lakewood keeper with no chance. Clearly familiar with the challenging pitch conditions, Mallow had the best of the opening exchanges and it was almost half time before Lakewood began to create openings.

Lakewood had a much better second half and did create a number of clearcut scoring opportunities, which the Mallow keeper did well to foil. Daire O'Riordan and Jason Twomey worked hard to create openings for Lakewood but no luck fell their way and it was Mallow who ended up with the points.

UNDER 11 LEAGUE

Macroom 1 Corkbeg 2

MACROOM under 11s were stunned late on to go down undeservedly to a pacey Corkbeg side. Macroom got off to a perfect start, with Cathal O Riordan hitting a superb free kick after two minutes. The game was even enough for the first half but had a flat feel to it, with few chances.

Four minutes before half time, Corkbeg hit an equaliser. Some poor positioning and marking allowed Corkbeg to beat Condon in goals from close range. The second half started at a much higher pace, with both sides seeking a winner. Jack Kelleher was working hard up front, but Corkbeg closed down any space well.

Then the killer blow for the home side. A long ball forward deceived the Macroom backline, and the ball fell twenty yards out. The Corkbeg number ten still had a lot to do, but he finished superbly to win it for Corkbeg.

In the dying moments, O'Riordan swung in a free kick, and substitute Dylan Gray was a whisker away from finishing at the back post with his head. A tough lesson for Macroom.
