O'Callaghan goal seals away win for Rockies

Thursday February 18 2010

UCC 0 Rockmount 1: A GOAL shortly before half-time was all Rockmount needed to extend their lead at the top of the Senior Premier Division at the Mardyke on Saturday.

The single goal belies the number of opportunites the dominant Rockmount carved out in this game and the margin could have been far greater. Before the breakthrough Ruairi Beechinor and Christopher Butt both came close for the Whitechurch side while their defence looked capable all through.

On 40 minutes Ross O'Callaghan got a free header from a Willie Byrne corner which he duly dispatched to the net and this proved to be the decider at full-time.

O'Callaghan nearly repeated the dose late in the second half and, again, UCC keeper denied Christopher Butt but it was the students who nearly snatched the equaliser at the death only for keeper Donnacha Murphy to deny Richie Ryan, and UCC, and share of the points.

Elsewhere in the Premier division, Blarney Utd swapped placed with UCC courtesy of a 3-1 loss to the students at home and they were also beaten 1-0 by second placed Avondale Utd, away from home.

In a busy week, Rockmount also beat St Mary's 3-1 while bottom-placed Ballincollig — still with zero points, fell foul of a 6-0 drubbing courtesy of Douglas Hall.
