Two goal Killowen too strong for Fairview
League 2A
Thursday February 26 2009
KILLOWEN 2 FAIRVIEW 0 GOALS from Paul Lynch and Declan O'Brien condemned Fairview to only their second league defeat of the season following this top of the table clash at Killowen.
The home side showed three changes from last weeks defeat in Carrigtwohill. Team captain Eoin O' Sullivan and Eoin Scannell resumed at centre half and right back respectively with Paul Lynch starting in attack.
Killowen started brightly as Declan O'Brien and Paul Lynch saw their efforts go narrowly wide in the opening minutes. The home side's hard work finally paid off after 17 minutes, Patrick Bermingham's well delivered corner kick was headed powerfully to the net by Paul Lynch. The advantage was almost doubled a minute later, the visitors 'keeper failed to hold an O'Brien free kick with Bermingham's follow up shot blocked in the resulting goalmouth scramble. Midfielder Declan O'Donoghue was next to try his luck after 30 minutes, but he volleyed over from outside the area.
Fairview's only serious attack of the half almost yielded an equaliser after 36 minutes. A close range header from a corner struck the crossbar and the rebound was cleared off the line as Killowen entered the interval with their slender advantage still intact.
The competitive nature of this game was clearly evident in the opening stages of the second half as both sides gave their all. The turning point in this contest came just after the hour mark. Fairview shot wide from a good position and in Killowen's next attack O' Donoghue was fouled 25 yards from the Fairview goal. Once again O' Brien showed his expertise from the dead ball as his powerful free kick flew into the top corner to give Killowen a two goal victory and narrow the gap at the top of the table.
