Visitors meet their Waterloo against mercurial Macroom Bs
Thursday September 02 2010
MACROOM B got their second win of the season on Saturday afternoon, comfortably beating Waterloo 4-0 in a sun baked Town Park.
Both sides started well, and the pace was intense despite the hot conditions. The away side had the first chance of the game, when an excellent through ball found the Waterloo's Jason Linzell, whose left footed effort flashed just wide.
The home side slowly got to grips with the game, and had two chances to sneak into the lead, however both Denis Cronin and John Corkery's efforts flew just over the bar.
Waterloo nearly made them pay for those missed chances when, in the 28th minute, it took an excellent one handed save from Macroom stopper Peter Burns to deny the Linzell again. The closing stages of the first half were scrappy, with both sides having to fend off half chances.
The second half saw the home side up the ante, and they hit the front on 52 minutes, when a penalty was given following a handball. Brendan O'Mahony stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way.
Macroom started to see more space after this, as Waterloo had to step higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser. In their pursuit, the away side found themselves on the end of a devastating counter attack on 69, where link up play from Brendan O'Mahony and Barry Fitzgerald found Patrick Burns, who crossed the ball for Andrew Hegarty to head home.
The link up was present again when Burns again squared unselfishly for Hegarty to finish from close range. The creator got his reward on 82 minutes, when excellent build up play from Alan O'Connor and Darren Burns found Steven Murphy, who squared for Patrick Burns to grab the home sides fourth goal.
